About the Candidate
The successful candidate’s research is expected to be firmly grounded in modelling, and involve scientific computation, with the aim of elucidating the underpinnings of phenomena occurring in natural and engineered systems. The successful candidate is expected to initiate a vigorous and modern research programme in mathematics, pursuing research funding, publishing high quality research outputs, and training and mentoring research staff and students to the highest scientific standards.  Finally, we expect the successful candidate will be a team player, establishing research collaborations within the department, at college level and beyond, as well as contributing to the section’s important activities, such as teaching and seminars.
About the Role
You will be engaged with research, education, and administrative duties in complete alignment with the department’s strategy, goals and vision. Among your research duties, you will direct a research area at the highest scientifically rigorous levels, supervise, train and mentor research staff and students, obtain funds and research grants and encourage and guide junior research staff to do the same. You will teach and examine courses at all levels, teach modules in applied mathematics at all levels, and supervise PhD, MSc and MSci theses. You will also undertake appropriate administrative tasks in support of the department’s teaching and research activities and attend relevant academic or management committees. We particularly welcome and encourage applications from women, disabled people and ethnic minority groups, recognising they are under-represented across Imperial College.
Essential Requirements
  • PhD (or equivalent) in Mathematics or a closely related scientific field.
  • Research interests in computational mathematics and scientific computation applied to fields such as fluid dynamics, continuum and structural mechanics, materials science, mathematical biology, wave motion, etc.
  • The ability to conduct an independent research programme at the highest level of quality and impact.
  • An excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research outputs commensurate with career stage.
  • The ability to interact effectively with the broad range of research expertise in the Department of Mathematics, bringing together mathematical links to develop their research programme.
  • The ability to collaborate with colleagues and with other leading research groups nationally and internationally.
  • Experience of, or clear potential for, teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level across a range of subjects in computational mathematics and related areas.
  • The ability to supervise undergraduate and MSc research projects, including computation-focused projects.
For appointment to the position of Senior Lecturer, in addition to the above, candidates will also be expected to demonstrate:
  • An exceptionally strong research record in the field of Computational Mathematics.
  • A demonstrable track record of successful postgraduate student supervision and/or postgraduate mentoring.

  •  The salary range for a Senior Lecturer is £72,071 – £75,184 per annum (effective from 1 August 2023 until further notice, for London and Silwood Park).
