This research explores whether 1Black postgraduate research students (PGRs) experience specific challenges in gaining a sense of belonging within higher education institutions (HEIs) . The study draws on critical race theory as a lens to examine how dominant, White, Eurocentric, gendered norms persist within institutional cultures, epistemologies and academic practice. Findings are based on in-depth interviews with 10 1Black PGRs at HEIs across the UK and will be used to develop strategies that enhance sense of belonging within the research environment.
This research project is currently at the writing up stage. Outputs will be generated in 2020/21
1‘Black’ is used inclusively to refer to people of African descent, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese and multiracial backgrounds. While it is accepted that these groups are heterogeneous, we adopt this strategy to foster unity and facilitate collaboration. See our statement on racial categorisation and terminology.
