Dr Deborah Gabriel delivered the keynote address on the opening day of the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies (MeCCSA) 2020 annual conference hosted by the University of Brighton.
In her presentation, she argued that the media curriculum covering journalism, marketing, public relations and advertising is still very Eurocentric, presenting knowledge as neutral, when in fact it centralises, White, western values, cultures and knowledge, leading to the perpetuation of whiteness and reproduction of racist ideologies in media practice and popular culture.
Her presentation, entitled: Race, Racism and Resistance in Media Interactions and Environments and the Power of 3D Pedagogy: Decolonising, Democratising and Diversifying Media Education and Practice, bore the Black British Academics© logo, as Dr Gabriel gave examples of how media representations continue to construct people of colour through stereotypes that exoticize, dehumanise and infanticize, while reproducing notions of White superiority.
Dr Gabriel explained how she developed and embeds 3D Pedagogy into her teaching practice to decolonise, democratise and diversify the curriculum, and how her tripartite approach is necessary to address the shortcomings in current education practice.
